Who Exactly is Jacob Eaton?
March 29, 2022
It's been a while since I last sat down to write up a new post for this website. The last year or so has been a chaotic maelstrom between school and work, not to mention the effects of living in a world with COVID-19. For the time being, thankfully, things have slowed down. I thought I'd take the time to lay out where I am in life.
I'm an undergraduate mechanical engineering student studying at the University of Cincinnati. I'm on year 4 of the 5 year program and will be graduating in May 2023. The program lasts 5 years rather than the usual 4 due to the inclusion of alternating co-op semesters. I selected UC because I wanted to gain as much work experience as possible before I even obtain a degree. -

It may not seem like much has happened since the last time I made a post, but I have been doing a lot of work under the hood for this website. While messing around with CSS I have repeatedly broken and then fixed more elements than I would like to admit. I have been using a clone of this website to test changes before deploying to the real thing, it has been affectionately named Yuma.
Over the past month, I have implemented pagination, syntax highlighting, internet explorer specific CSS, and leveraged some of the features of Sass. I don’t think that’s too bad considering that I'm taking 16 credit hours of classes right now. -

Now that I have TLS set up for this website, I figured that it was time to see how secure it really is. I stumbled upon the tool "Security Headers" and was disappointed to see that I scored an F. I had never heard of security headers before, but decided that I wanted to implement them after doing some research.
After some failures attempting to use Netlify and Caddy, I discovered that Cloudflare has workers that could set up the headers. I highly recommend Scott Helme’s article on the matter. -

This is my first experience with hosting a website – I decided that I want a place to write about my projects and this is the result.
On the technical side of things, I am hosting this website through Jekyll on a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B. I was drawn to the ability to write my posts in markdown and Jekyll’s community of creators. I am using ClouDNS for DNS hosting. My TLS protection is provided by Cloudflare.
