YG1-TK - Replacing Rubber Parts

March 02, 2020

The rubber pieces on my YG1-TK have held up especially well considering that it’s from 1965. However, I decided that it was time to let the pieces go. Several blemishes make it clear that the previous owner may not have been as delicate with the motorcycle as I would’ve liked.

I had previously experimented with SainSmart’s black TPU to 3D print a replacement part for one of the crankcase covers of the YG1-TK. It’s held up incredibly well and provides me with the ability to easily reproduce the part should it get broken.

I haven’t quite dialed in my 3D printer to the point that I would like to, but the parts shown above work perfectly. They interface between the gas tank and the chassis of the motorcycle. With a few changes to the geometry such as adding a chamfer to the inner diameter as shown below, I was able me to print the parts without supports.

On the topic of 3D printing parts for the YG1-TK, I’m working on adding a third position to the headlight switch. This would allow me to select between high beams, low beams, and an LED halo ring. Below is a sneak peak of where I’m at with prototyping. I hope to have a more in depth post on that project soon.
